About the ISUM Summit:
Join us in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the International Society for Urban Mission (ISUM) Summit: Signs of Hope in the City. ISUM seeks to facilitate collaboration between a variety of urban Christians, including Ecumenicals and Evangelicals, Majority and Western world thinkers, activists and leaders, Church movements and development agencies. In partnership with the World Evangelical Alliance – Theological Commission, Micah Network, and Malaysian Care, This interactive summit will include keynotes from Dr. John M. Perkins and Dr. Jayakumar Christian, in addition to hands-on immersion opportunities, working groups and panel discussions. Outcomes from the summit will include published recommendations and calls to action. Dr. John M. Perkins is an international speaker and teacher on racial reconciliation, leadership and Christian community development. He established the John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation & Development, along with his wife, Vera Mae Perkins and a few friends and supporters. Dr. Perkins is also the founder of the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA), a network of 6,800 individuals and 600 churches, ministries, institutions and businesses in more than 100 cities and townships across the country. Despite being a third grade drop-out, Dr. Perkins has been recognized for his work with eleven honorary doctorates from colleges and universities across the country and two universities have established John Perkins centers.
Dr. Christian, the National Director of World Vision, India, has become one of the majority world’s most articulate theologian-practitioners on the role of the church among the poor. His book “God of the Empty-Handed: Poverty, Power, and the Kingdom of God” is essential reading in today’s urban mission settings. Dr. Christian received his Ph.D from Fuller Theological Seminary and was named alumnus of the year in 2002.
